Living with People
During my postgraduate journey, in our first year we were introduced to a transformative course, 'Living with People.' Through this course we got the rare opportunity to immerse ourselves in the lives of villagers in the remote community of Kaduvakothamangalam, deep in the heart of Tamil Nadu. This village, nestled far from the bustling urban sprawl, bore the marks of underdevelopment, yet radiated with the warmth of its people.
For a span of one month, I found myself embraced by the simplicity and authenticity of rural life, spending most of my time with a modest family of an elderly couple and their middle-aged son. I was not just an observer but an active participant in their daily activities and chores.
From dawn till dusk, I accompanied them on their ventures into the lush fields, together we nurtured their livestock. Amidst these surroundings, I was blessed with the awe-inspiring privilege of witnessing the miraculous birth of their goat's three adorable kids, with whom I spent countless hours playing.
During this time, I formed a special bond with the elderly mother, affectionately known as 'Paati', which is the Tamil term for grandmother. As each day unfolded, I became intricately woven into the fabric of Paati's life. Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering spirit were truly inspiring. The connection we shared made this month an unforgettable experience, one that will forever hold a special place in my heart.
This month-long experience was a journey of personal growth and empathy. It reminded me of the simple joys and hard-learned reality that come from living closely with others, understanding their struggles and celebrating their triumphs.
Below are some sketches I've created, inspired by my time with Paati and the profound impact she had on me.
